Bipinchandra breaks family tradition by marrying a city girl, Hemangini, much to the chagrin of his sister-in-law, Kadambini, and her husband, Navinchandra. Things are delicate even after both women give birth to two children each. Then Hemangini testifies against Navinchandra in Court, leading to the division of the property. Things got worse by the arrival of Kadambini's orphaned school-going step-brother, Kishan, who is beaten and abused by not only by Kadambini and Navinchandra, but also by their overweight son. When Hemangini objects to Kishan's ill-treatment, Bipin takes the side of the rest of the family, and may probably force her to abandon Kishan to his fate or divorce her.

Kishen a small village boy,finds himself transported to his married step sister Kadambini after his widowed mothers death. Kadambini takes her brothers responsibility with the intention of possessing his small village properties. Her husband, Nobin, accepts this arrangement and turns a blind eye to the ill-treatment that Kishen suffers. The other members of the household are Nobin`s younger brother, Bipin and his wife Hemangini, a noble lady, large hearted, gentle and ever righteous. Kadambini wanted a nuclear family and she succeeded in dividing the ancestral property. Meanwhile, Kishen is treated as a servant and Hemangini cannot tolerate his suffering at the hands of the cruel Kadambini. Kishen`s entry into Bipin`s portion of the house was also now restricted. Hemangini falls seriously ill, and Kishen is horrified to find that she seems to be ailing from the same illness that caused his mother`s death.

Gopal's sister believes that she knows what is best for him. But a series of events causes turbulence in the family.

Prakash (Saigal) is a worker who designs a more efficient machine for the factory for which he first gets sacked and then is re-employed. He falls in love with Prabhavati`s sister Sheila (Desai), who later makes way for Prabhavati who is also in love with Prakash. Her withdrawal distresses Prakash, causing her to bully the workers who then go on strike.
